On paper, it is the world's fastest smartphone at the moment. The model is so special for Samsung as the company is trying to overcome the criticism, especially in the US, that it is an imitator of Apple. The new model has indeed some features which Apple?'s iPhone 5 doesn?'t have. It is so strong on the hardware front that it is the first phone to have an octa-core processor. Among Samsung S4?'s other rivals are HTC One, Nokia Lumia 920 and Sony Xperia Z.
Hardware, OS and some features
The most talked-about feature of the model is the unique Exynos 5410, the 8-core (1.6 GHz ) processor. It is, in fact, a combination of two quad-core processors. For less demanding tasks only one of the quad-core set will be used. That will be less demanding on the battery too. It also has 2 GB of RAM.
It has a 5-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen with a 1920x1080p resolution (441 ppi, protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3)? the best screen to be seen on a Samsung mobile device till now. The company has also managed to limit its weight to 130 grams.
It runs the latest Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) out of the box.
On the connectivity front the phone offers features like 2G, 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0 and even Infrared. Apps making use of the IR may allow the user to use the phone as a remote control for his home entertainment system.
Like other devices in its class, Samsung S4 has two cameras: the main camera has a 13 MP sensor with autofocus; the front snapper has a 2MP resolution sensor, which offers Full HD recording of video at 30 frames per second.
The three versions available in the market are 16, 32 and 64GB variants. But unlike Apple?s iPhone, the internal storage may not be much of a problem as Samsung?s baby accepts microSD cards up to 64 GB capacity.
It has a beefier battery than its predecessor, the Galaxy S3, which has a capacity of 2,600 mAh. Samsung claims that the device will be more power-efficient than the S3.
One another notable improvisation is Samsung's proprietary TouchWiz user interface (UI), which is not like anything that has been available for the Android user till now.
The new UI offers gesture-based control. It will allow the user to perform many tasks without touching the screen.
The front camera, which has been used mostly for video calls till now, gets a new lease of life in the gesture-based UI. For example the phone knows when a user looks away from the screen while watching video and poses the movie automatically. The video resumes to play when the users looks on to the screen again. The user can also scroll down on to a web page while reading an article by simply swiping his hand from up to down in air! Some critics may call these actions gimmicky.
Another camera feature is the Dual Mode that will allow the user to use both the front and back cameras simultaneously for video recording. For example this mode may be good for capturing a stage performance and the reaction of the audience to it at the same time.
Another feature is Air Gesture. With it one can hover one?s finger over galleries and see previews of the content.
Pricing and competition
Galaxy S4 will be available across India for a price of Rs 41,500.
One of its competitors, the HTC One, has an MRP of Rs. 42,900. Several analysts have called the HTC phone as one of the most beautiful and well built Android smartphones ever to come out. If we are considering looks alone, the Galaxy S4 loses out to the One.
Its third competitor, the 16GB iPhone 5 is priced at Rs. 45,500. Though a smooth performer, its screen size is a bit of a put off for some users.
(Options for those who are looking for cheaper Samsung phones: the Galaxy S III sells for around Rs 28,000 and the Galaxy Note II is available for a price of around Rs 34,000.)
Conclusion
Samsung Galaxy S4 is the best attempt by the company in bringing out a premium smartphone. But if it doesn?'t appear to be a stunning piece of tech wizardry, it is partly because the touchscreen technology itself has reached a plateau.
The 8-core processor and the TouchWiz user interface seem to be the main attractions of the phone. Some S3 users may find the device as an incremental update and not a substantial one to go for an upgrade.
However, if next version of Apple?s iPhone fails to impress, there is a good chance that many users may be tempted to try out the Galaxy S4.
(But if the potential buyer of S4 is not in a hurry, it may be advisable to wait for a few more months and see what Apple has to offer before making the purchase.)
